New Coach New Team Town has never heard of Lacrosse Advise Needed
Hey everyone,
I hope you're all having a great day! I'm in Miami, FL, and I'm excited to be a coach for the past 4 years. Lacrosse is picking up momentum around here, and I've got some enthusiastic players who want to take their game to the next level. So, I've decided to put together a girls lacrosse club team. But, truth be told, we're not going to be the top-tier team right away. We've got mostly 7th graders and freshmen on our varsity team. Still, we all have to start somewhere, right? Now, I need your advice on a couple of things:
-
What age group should we aim for in the club team? HS Division or 16U? Is there a noticeable difference between the two, and which one would be a better fit for us considering our players' ages and skill level?
-
I've heard about the IWCLA Debut tournament, which seems like a great opportunity for new teams like ours. But I'm not entirely clear on the differences between IWCLA Debut and their other tournaments in Tampa. Can someone help clarify that for us? We want to make sure we choose the right tournaments for our team's level and aspirations.
-
As we're just starting, any additional advice or recommendations for a new team like ours would be incredibly helpful. Are there any tournaments that would be perfect for our development? Also, any tips on creating a supportive and encouraging environment for our young players?
Thanks a bunch for taking the time to read this and share your experiences. I'm really looking forward to your insights and suggestions. Let's work together to nurture the love for girls lacrosse in our community and give these players the best possible start in the sport!

Since you are in Miami you should prob reach out to the Florida Youth Lacrosse Foundation. FYLF. They are out of Boca. They can assist with getting the program started and prob answer a bunch of questions you have.
My Experience with what you are trying to do.
1. Play HS division but in the lowest tier available, Beginner tier unless you have some skilled players as there are some really good HS regional teams that are not Grad year teams
2. Debut could be good but it will have some competitive teams, usually a showcase for younger girls who have been playing together since elementary school. Presidents cup in Tampa is a Showcase event and will have very good teams, even in the HS B bracket.
3. Regional (Florida) tournaments might be a better intro for the girls. Southern Lax Fest Kissimmee, Veterans day invitational Palm Coast, Sunshine state games Vero beach are all fall tournaments that might be good intro tourneys to start with. Contact FYLF for support.
Hope this helps!
